American Ball

What is the song Darktown Strutters Ball about?

Does it mean going to an African American ball? Cause if so, that seems a little offensive.

Hi,

This is one of the first jazz tunes ever recorded (first recording from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917).

After that it was recorded and performed by many African American jazz musicians (e.g. Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald).

From todays point of view the expression 'Darktown' might be offensive. However, neither the white nor the black musicians who recorded or performed it had problems with the song. The song was never meant to be racist or something like that.

Todays political correctness can't possibly be a benchmark for older songs. If so you couldn't even use the word negro-spirituals because of the word 'negro'.

IMHO, it's always the real meaning of a word that counts...

Edit: I realized that the word N.E.G.R.O. couldn't even be written here. Sorry, but I have never used the word African American Spirituals and I don't think that Mahalia Jackson used another word for this type of music.

Just to make it clear for everybody. I have nothing against African American people and love their culture. Without them USA would be a very poor country in any sense...
