Ammonium carbamate dissociation - why was the isoteniscope U-tube filled with mercury?
On investigation of the thermodynamics of ammonium carbamate dissociation:
NH2COONH4 (s) <--> 2NH3 (g) + CO2 (g)
Equipment used was ballast chamber, Pressure Gauge, cold trap, stirrer, water bath, isoteniscope, vacuum line etc...
Why did we fill the U-tube with mercury and not ammonium carbamate?
Thank you in advance.

You described a chemical reaction
NH2COONH4 (s) <--> 2NH3 (g) + CO2 (g)
which results a dissociation.
On the other hand, a solid stuff gives several gas products : so, in a closed vessel you have to attempt a pressure increasing since it gives gas moles.
If you connected the U-type (e.g. Isoteniscopic) tube to the closed chamber, you have to record pressure increasing.
An italian scientist (E. Torricelli, XVII century) introduced the glass-pipe filled by liquid mercury : since it is a very heavy liquid, it results very valuable to measure pressure's exchange.
Going back to your experiment, you will see a rising of the mercury inside the U-pipe since the inner pressure in the vessel rises owing to Ammonia and Carbon Dioxide's forming (e.g. NH3 and CO2).
I hope this helps you.
