The installation of PIR sensors is nowadays incorporated in the construction of buildings. This is an electronic gadget that gauges the emitted infrared light from objects that are in its area of vision. Falling under this category of sensors is the occupancy sensor , a lighting device that has the capability to identify occupied areas and modify the lighting, cooling and heating in the building. Equipment is then turned on or off accordingly.

A sensor helps minimize utility costs with its ability to detect unoccupied area. Once it senses an unoccupied lighted area, the gadget turns off unneeded lights and regulates temperature controls. Hence, the use of electricity is minimized in areas that are not actively being used during certain hours. On the other hand, it automatically turns on the light once it identifies any motion and regulates the temperature control gadget. With these abilities, the person who enters the room will feel comfortable and will not have to grope in the dark looking for the light switch.

If used for security reasons, every area of the building must have occupancy detectors. Surveillance cameras are activated by setting up the occupancy detector together with some monitoring schemes. This allows the security staff to see any person who has entered certain areas in the building.

Other than regulating the lights as well as the temperature controls, occupancy detectors can also perform other functions. They can be programmed so that doors will automatically open and close when an individual enters and leaves the premises or a specific area. They can also turn on equipment when someone enters the room and turn it off when the room is vacated or unoccupied.

Those that turn off the lights and equipment when the room is unoccupied are the basic types of occupancy detectors. These, however, require the person entering the room to switch on the lights and turn on the equipment. The occupancy detector works when the room has been vacated for a certain period by turning off both the lights and equipment. These types of sensors are not costly and can be easily used as an additional device for the current power system of any residential building.

The occupancy detector consists of three parts: the motion sensor, an electronic regulating unit and a controllable switch. Detecting motion and transmitting the proper indicators to the regulating unit is done by the motion sensor. The signals received by the regulating unit are then processed to either shut or open the switch control of the lights.

The security systems created for residential and commercial areas to detect trespassers became the foundation of this basic technology. It has undergone a more rigid procedure to make it more advanced and sophisticated. Occupancy sensors with PIR sensors are not merely designed to detect unauthorized entrances but have been enhanced to sense unoccupied areas as well as detect slight motions and maximize its regulating abilities.
