Help! I'm having a serious dilema with my closet! Someone that knows home repairs please!?

I have a ten foot long by 22" deep closet. It HAD one of those closet shelf/pole units in it. You know, the kind that's rubber coated metal. Has little clips to hold it up Well, whoever the jack*** was that put it up didn't put any hardware into the studs. So, this is (was) my plan: I bought two 22" 2X4's to put horizonal at each end of the closet on the wall. I was going to attach those to the studs in the corners (behind the dry wall) with 3 " wood screws. Then I was going to put steel (very heavy duty) pole holders on the 2X4's in the middle. The holders are threaded and I was going to use conduit that's threaded at the ends for the pole. Anyway, got my boards drilled for the wood screws, was going to drill into the studs behind the wall but they're so far in the corner I can't get the drill into them cuz the wall is in the way. Can I use long nails or what!!! Any suggestions what to do? It HAS to support ALOT of weight! A serious lot- Too much for the original unit.

Ok, I understand your problem. Yes, you can use heavy duty long nails into the studs on the ends of your closet--but, since your closet is so long, you should consider putting a pole in a T coupling down to the floor-in two places to help support the load.
Screw a flanged attachment to the bottom of the two support poles at the base to further disburse the weight from the overhead pole.
